Everybody seems to have an opinion on this and not just an opinion, but a passionate opinion.  But, how many of us have actually read the text of the bill itself?  Have YOU?  What are you waiting for then? [Here it is]

What parts of it are good and what parts are bad.  Comment below with the references to the text of the bill you're talking about. Be sure to also vote on the poll of what you think about SOPA here.

Main arguments raised against SOPA (2011–2012):

  1. Website blocking
Allowing court-ordered DNS blocking of sites accused of piracy.

  2. Threat to free speech
Entire sites could be targeted based on user-uploaded content.

  3. Burden on platforms
Sites hosting user content (forums, blogs, social networks) could face legal risk.

  4. Impact on startups and innovation
Compliance costs and liability concerns could discourage new platforms.

  5. DNS security concerns
DNS blocking was argued to conflict with internet security systems such as DNSSEC.

  6. Private enforcement powers
Rights holders could request payment processors and ad networks cut off services to accused sites.

  7. Overbroad enforcement scope
Critics argued it could affect legitimate sites that merely link to or host content connected to alleged infringement.

  8. Risk of internet fragmentation
Some argued blocking mechanisms could push users toward alternative DNS systems.

  9. Due process concerns
Critics argued some enforcement actions could occur before a full legal process resolved claims.

  10. Potential global precedent
Concern that other governments might adopt similar blocking frameworks for different types of content.
